One Patient's Perspective

Bryan C. Cole Smith, EdM 

Bryan Cole Smith is currently the program coordinator for the Ryan White grants in the Department of Oral Medicine within the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Among his various duties, he acts as a client liaison between the HIV community and the School. He has also been a patient of Penn’s health system for over 20 years. This duality provides perspectives as both a patient and an employee.

Course Description

A didactic discussion of the roles of patient and provider, with emphasis on the arena of HIV.

Educational Objectives

• Better understand the concept of person-first language.

• Gain empathy for the role of the patient.

• Understand the roles of Specialty Clinics, Patient Advocate, and Provider.
