Dental Roots: A Brief Personal Tour Through the History of UK Dentistry
Speaker
Dr. Mike Gow graduated from Glasgow University’s Dental School in 1999 and by 2005, he had graduated with a Masters in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry from University College London having been awarded a ‘distinction’ for the Diploma. He then completed a Postgraduate Certificate in the Management of Dental Anxiety from the University of Edinburgh.
Mike is a Past President (2008-10, 2014-16) of “The British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis (Scotland)”. He has published many articles, case studies and book chapters on hypnosis and dental anxiety management and has appeared on TV several times (including BBC’s Horizon) demonstrating the use of hypnosis in dental pain control.
Mike has a keen interest in his family tree and after discovering that he was the sixth dentist in his family, he became fascinated by the history of medicine and dentistry. He is currently filming a documentary about the life of Scottish Dr James Braid who is credited with the 'discovery' of hypnosis. He also recently appeared on the 'Tony Robinson's History of Britain' TV documentary.

Course Description
This lecture will explore some of the history of dentistry in Scotland and the UK from the unique vantage of the speaker's own ancestors. Mike Gow is the sixth dentist in his family and in this presentation he will talk about his ancestors and what their lives and work in dentistry would have been like. He will discuss the important Dental Acts of the 19th and 20th centauries and how they affected his family.

- Explain the difference between a lay dentist, a qualified dentist and a surgeon dentist in UK history.
- List details about the life of Edward Tull- Warnock, the first black qualified dentist in the UK.
