TMJ Arthrocentesis: Is Hyaluronic Acid or Corticosteroid Superior to Lactated Ringer Solution?

Helen Giannakopoulos, DDS, MD is an Associate Professor and since 2012, she has been the Residency Program Director in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Penn. She is part of the Center for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, as well as the Guideline Chair for the American Society of TMJ Surgeons (ASTMJS). Her specific areas of clinical interest and research activity includes 1) full-scope temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery including arthoscopy, arthroplasty, and TMJ stock and custom replacement, 2) botulinum neurotoxin (Botox and Dysport) injections for facial pain and dystonia, 3) orthognathic surgery and 4) oral and maxillofacial benign pathology.

Course Description
The goal of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMD)treatment is an improvement or elimination of the pain and an increase in function. Arthrocentesis has long been used for the treatment of temporomandibular joint internal derangements and arthralgia with good success. A comparison HA, CA and lactated Ringer solution (LR; placebo) after arthrocentesis will be made.
