CBCT Join Space Consideration for the TMD Patient

Normand S. Boucher, DDS is a board certified orthodontist. He trained in orthodontics and periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Boucher was appointed Chief of Orthodontics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital from 1982-1987. He subsequently established a full-time private practice in Wayne and Westtown in 1987. His teaching responsibilities with the orthodontic department at the University of Pennsylvania reflect the values of his private practice and include teaching diagnosis and treatment planning for the Six Elements of Orofacial Harmony Orthodontics Philosophy with strong emphasis on the health of the temporomandibular joints.
Dr. Wenjing Yu is an instructor in the department of Orthodontics at School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She received her dental education and Orthodontics specialty training at Sichuan University, China, in 2015. She then completed her dural training in basic research and Orthodontics at Penn Dental DScD-combined Orthodontics program in 2022. Her research interest lies in the dental-derived stem cells behavior during orthodontic treatment and TMD progress. She has 15 peer-reviewed publications over the year.
Dr. Hyeran Helen Jeon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Immediately after her graduation from the Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) and certificate program in Orthodontics at Penn, Dr. Jeon joined the faculty at Penn. Her main research interests are: (1) bone remodeling, (2) wound healing, and (3) maxillary expansion using temporary anchorage devices (TADs). Since her DScD, Dr. Jeon has been strongly involved in student research mentoring including 1 MSOB student, 4 Orthodontic residents, 5 dental students and 3 undergraduate students. With her clinical background in both Orthodontics and Periodontics, she teaches both predoctoral and postdoctoral students at Penn. Dr. Jeon currently practices Orthodontics at the Penn Dental Family Practice at Locust Walk.

Course Description
CBCT has become the radiographic imaging technique of choice in the diagnosis of TMJ disorders. Dr. Wendy Yu, Dr.Helen Jeon, and Dr Normand Boucher will describe the CBCT derived diagnosis of altered joint spaces as it relates to a variety of temporomandibular joint disorders. Dr. Yu and Dr. Jeon will report the findings of their recent study on the relationship of a larger than normal anterior joint space and discal displacement.
Educational Objectives
- The proportionate relationship of the anterior, superior, and posterior joint spaces when the disc is optimally positions in a healthy TMJ.
- The significance of a larger than normal anterior joint space
- The significance of a diminished superior joint space
