Dr. Evangelos Papathanasiou completed his dental education at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (DDS, 2006) and later at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) (DMD, 2016). He also earned both a Certificate in Periodontology and a Master of Science Degree from Tufts University (2011) and his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (2016) having conducted his experimental dissertation work at the Forsyth Institute, Cambridge MA. He is a recipient of a K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award by NIH/NIDCR (2018-2024) and he recently completed a second Master of Science Degree in Clinical Translational Science from Tufts University (2021). Currently a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology & Implant Surgery, an Associate Professor at the Department of Periodontology at TUSDM and practicing limited to Periodontics & Implant Therapy in Boston, MA.
Dr. Papathanasiou’s research involves clinical and preclinical translational research that investigates the molecular mechanisms of oral inflammation and wound healing with the goal to develop novel drugs that promote tissue regeneration. He also leads several clinical research studies and clinical trials that aim to discover predictive and prognostic biomarkers for periodontal and peri-implant diseases susceptibility and progression. Dr. Papathanasiou has been a lecturer in several conferences around the world and is an author of several publications in peer-review scientific journals and book chapters.
Disclosure: Dr. Papathanasiou has no relevant financial relationships to disclose.
Course Description
Dr. Papathanasiou will be using several examples of his clinical translational research projects and funded studies to highlight the opportunities for collaborations between different disciplines and institutes. The aim of his presentation will be to set the stage to link scientists who wish to collaborate and build on one another's progress and how to identify and overcome potential challenges in national and international large-team research projects and tap into new sources of funding.
Educational Objectives
- Clinical Translational Research, Synergism, Collaborations, Mentoring.
