Dr. Leon Assael is the Director of Institutional Effectiveness at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He is Dean Emeritus of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and past Chairman of the Board of the American Dental Education Association. He has scientific interests in maxillofacial neurological disorders, access to care, health equity, community based education, inter professional education, and systems based health care.
Dr. Abdirahman Ahmed is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with Doctor In Dental Surgery. He has10 years of experience working with low-income patients. Graduated From the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's Degree. Dr. Ahmed is Passionate about Dentistry. He is a fellow at the Implant Institute, Associate Fellow at the Gp Orthodontics and Cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Nathan Pederson earned his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 2004. From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Pederson served as an Associate Dentist at the Fond du Lac Tribal Clinic in Cloquet, Minnesota. In 2006, Dr. Pederson established a private practice in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Course Description
There has been much misinformation and confusion circulating about the dental therapist model for providing dental care. In this lecture, Dr. Assael will provide an overview covering the scope of service of dental therapists, their education, supervision, demonstrated quality and impact on access. Drs. Abdirahman and Pedersen, two private practitioners from Minnesota, will present their personal experience and perspectives of working hands-on with dental therapists in their practices.
Educational Objectives
- Gain knowledge of the scope of services, education, supervision, quality and impact on equity and access to dental care associated with incorporation of dental therapists into the dental care team.
- Achieve a better understanding of how dental therapists can be incorporated into dental practice to provide high quality, safe and cost effective care.
