Dr. Hatice Hasturk is a Senior Member of the Staff and the Director of Center for Clinical and Translational Research Center at the Forsyth Institute, Cambridge, MA, USA. She also holds an Adjunct Associate Professor position at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine. She received her dental degree in 1988 and her Ph.D. in periodontology in 1995 from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey and certificate of advanced graduate sciences in periodontology from Boston University in 2004. She is a board-certified periodontist practicing part time along with her research activities.
Dr. Hasturk’s research focuses on the immune mechanisms between periodontitis and systemic inflammatory diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis and treatment of oral diseases by regulation of inflammatory response and novel therapeutics in resolution of inflammation and prevention and treatment of oral diseases. Her research focus has been directed at clinical and translational research since early 2000 and supported by grants from the NIH/NIDCR, industry and foundations. She has authored/coauthored more than 110 scientific publications and numerous abstracts and book chapters in peer-reviewed dental and medical journals. She is the recipient of 2016 International Association of Dental Research (IADR) William Geis Award, 2020 American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Clinical Research Award and 2020-2021 American Dental Association (ADA) Norton Ross Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. She is a member of the IADR, AAP, ADA, American Diabetes Association, European Federation of Periodontology and New York Academy of Medical Sciences.

This lecture provides an overview of the current clinical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, limitations and potential areas of improvement through translational research and its strategies.
