Trauma Informed Care: Lessons Learned and New Approaches

Olivia Sheridan, DMD is a 1990 graduate of Penn Dental Medicine, where she completed a two-year AEGD residency and a fellowship at the Philadelphia VA hospital. She joined the faculty of Penn Dental in 1992, and has been a clinical instructor, group leader, and until January 2024, the founder and director of the Vulnerable Populations Clinic. She has taught and/or directed several courses during her time at PDM, including geriatrics, dental auxiliary utilization, practice management and communication, patient behavior, and multidisciplinary seminars among them. Her 15 year administrative career at PDM concluded in 2022 when she retired as Associate Dean for Admissions. She was the founder and director of the Family Practice at Bryn Mawr, and practiced for many years in the Family Practice at Locust Walk. She has had a career long interest in treating vulnerable populations and developing effective identification of these patients and modifications for effective treatment.

Course Description
Current understanding of trauma and traumatic experiences indicates that significant numbers of dental patients bring trauma histories to our offices. Understanding the biologic and psycho-social implications of trauma in our care of patients is of critical importance.
Educational Objectives
- Understand the nature of trauma, its implications in patient behavior and care, and use current approaches to provide sensitive and informed care by the whole dental team.
