Partnering with Direct Support Professionals to Promote Optimal Oral Health for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Speaker
Course Description
Direct Support Professionals are paid caregivers of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). They are responsible for all day-to-day activities involved in promoting the health and wellbeing of people with IDD including oral hygiene. For this reason, they are ideal oral health champions for people with IDD. Given the myriad responsibilities and challenges of the DSP role, DSPs frequently need support in adequately caring for the oral hygiene of people with IDD. This presentation provides an overview of Special Outreach Services, an oral health education and support program for DSPs. The presentation will review ways to develop long-term partnerships with DSPs to ensure long-term improved oral health outcomes for the individuals they serve.
