Developing a Prevention Plan for Patients and Care Givers: Overcoming Barriers to Providing Effective Oral Care

Dr. Alicia Risner-Bauman has a DDS from the University of Iowa, a Diplomate from American Board of Special Care Dentistry, and a Fellowship from the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities. She volunteers on numerous committees focused on access to care and advocating for dental care for vulnerable populations. She practiced 25+yrs in various clinic settings where she treated individuals of all ages and ability levels before becoming the Associate Director of the Center for Individuals with Disabilities at University of Pennsylvania and Associate Professor of Clinical Oral Medicine and Restorative Dentistry. She has several publications and presentations relating to advocacy and treatment for complex patients and access to care.

Course Description
Discuss various challenges to providing oral care to patients with disabilities. Will give examples of physical, emotional, and behavioral challenges and provide strategies to overcome each challenge.
Educational Objectives
- Learn to identify physical barriers to providing oral care and how to address these obstacles with care providers.
- Understand the importance of sharing treatment strategies with care givers for oral care at home.
- Identify and implement strategies to address emotional and behavioral challenges to oral care in an office and home setting.
