Reduce Cancellations, Expand Access: Recognize, Refer, and Re‑Engage Patients with Dental Fear

Richard E. Heyman is a professor at New York University, where he co-directs the Family Translational Research Group. Dr. Heyman earned a B.S. from Duke University and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon. He has published over 250 scientific articles/chapters and received over 75 grants/contracts from major U.S. funding agencies.The core of his research program is translating basic knowledge into prevention and treatment and improving the adoption of evidence-based practices. He is an expert on dental fear and is currently leading an NIDCR-funded, large-scale (1250 patients, over 100 referring practices) RCT of a highly disseminable stepped-care dental fear treatment and an NIDCR-funded RCT of a virtual-reality treatment. Dr. Heyman is a licensed psychologist.
