Creative Harvest Sites for Autogenous Bone Grafting

Howard Gluckman completed his dental training at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1990. After spending a number of years in general practice, he completed a 4-year full time degree in Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, which he completed with distinction(cum Laude) in 1998. He was intimately involved in the development of the postgraduate diploma in Implantology at both the University of Stellenbosch and later at the University of Western Cape. Dr Gluckman recently completed his PhD titled “Partial Extraction Therapy: Past, Present and Future” (Summa Cum Laude) at the University of Szeged in Hungary, under the supervision of Professor Katalin Nagy. He is currently in full time private practice in Cape Town. He is also the director of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy, which is a private post graduate training facility currently providing a complete postgraduate training program in Implantology and Aesthetic Dentistry in South Africa. The Academy is accredited by The University of Stony Brook University, New York and DentalXP. Dr Gluckman has been involved in Implantology training for over 20 years.
His special interests are immediate placement/ immediate load as well as soft tissue aesthetics and periodontal plastic surgery, autogenous bone augmentation especially bone harvested from the palate and three-dimensional bone augmentation.

Course Description
Autogenous bone remains the gold standard of bone grafting. There are many intraoral sites that can be utilized for intraoral bone grafting. How does one decide where to harvest from. Is one site suitable for all areas or do we need to choose the best area based on the size and anatomy of the recipient defect. What are the complicating factors that we need to look out for. This lecture will delve into all the issues about when and where to harvest autogenous bone and include tips and tricks.

- What are the possible complications for each site and how to harvest from each of the sites safely.
- How does one choose a harvest site.
- Is it one site fits all or are there certain areas that will work better for certain defects.
