To Save or to Replace: a Clinical Dilemma

Dr. Sandrine Barakat completed her D.M.D. at the University of Montreal in 2009. She then pursued postgraduate studies in Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2012, also completing a Masters of Science in Oral Biology leading to a published paper. Dr Barakat worked in private practice in Philadelphia until 2015, while teaching in the department of Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. She currently practices in Laval and in Westmount, and is a clinician at the university. Dr Barakat is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She is a member of multiple associations such as the American Academy of Periodontology, the Canadian Academy of Periodontology and the Quebec Association of Periodontists, and has been invited as a guest speaker at national and international meetings in North America and in Europe.
Dr. Chafic Safi completed his postgraduate residency in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania in 2015 where he also completed a Master of Science in Oral Biology researching the outcome of endodontic microsurgery and factors affecting prognosis. Dr. Safi received the Penn Endo best topic presentation award in 2014 and lectured at the Penn Endo Global Symposium, at the McGill Endodontics Symposium, at the Journées Dentaires Internationales du Québec and at the American Association of Endodontics meetings. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. Dr. Safi remains on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Endodontics, as an adjunct assistant professor. He is also a faculty lecturer for Next Level Endodontics. He founded Centre Endodontique Saint-Laurent in Montreal, Canada where he lives and practices.

Course Description
A clinician often finds himself faced with a clinical dilemma to save or extract a tooth: what is the short and long-term prognosis of the tooth? What are the clinical implications of both options?
Educational Objectives
- Assess the success of modern endodontic therapy
- Differentiate between success and survival of implants
- Assess prognosis of periodontally compromised teeth
- Understand the different treatment modalities available to save a tooth
